TSCL History

In the early 1970's, Therapeutic Soft Contact Lenses were approved by the FDA for limited use in humans. However, TSCL's have wider use in veterinary applications. Initially TSCL's were used primarily (and tested) in the treatment of corneal ulcers. Various studies have shown the benefits of TSCL's include; protecting the cornea, relieving pain and enhancing healing.

The availability and variety of TSCL's has expanded. The water content, polymer chemistry and lens thickness determine the oxygen permeability (DK) of these contact lenses. Lower water content lenses with steeper base curves and less movement can induce more corneal edema. TSCL's can be used when treating infectious corneal ulcers to provide protection to the fragile, healing corneal epithelium. Though used as a non-traditional bandage in human ophthalmology, veterinarians have found TSCL's very effective in treating their patients who do not have the same self-control as the human patient.

We feature the most comprehensive selection of soft contact bandage and therapeutic lenses on the market today. These lensesare available in a wide array of diameters and base curves, all designed specifically for the animal patient.

Polymer technologies-We feature three polymer selections, including 55%, 63% and 74% hydrophilic. Depending upon your application, certain lenses may provide a better solution and we have technical consultation services available.

Key to understanding the value of the polymers is the water content (DK) ratio which determines the oxygen permeability and drug delivery capability of the polymer. The higher the number, the better the therapeutic aspect attributable to the lens. Our 74% material is the only FDA approved material for implantation in humans available to the market today. These materials constitute the major difference between our lenses and those of the competition.
