In 1968, Mr. Anton Banko founded his company, Surgical Design, to develop advanced phaco devices. His son, William Banko, MD, continues today. It is easy to recognize them as the leader in this technology, as well as the innovators.

The major features of Surgical Design phacoemulsification systems include:

Magnetostrictive Phaco Handpieces- While all other manufacturers have selected the less expensive ultrasonic crystals known as piezoelectric in their handpieces, these do not deliver the ultrasonic energy as efficiently to the phaco probe, are heavier and inherently less reliable. Magnetostrictive on the other hand uses a nickel stack assembly that is actuated by an electronic field to provide ultrasonic emulsification action of the phaco probe as efficiently as possible.

The Cobra Tip- This is the most powerful phaco tip in the industry and will go through the densest lenses. Combined with the spiral sleeve, routine phaco is accomplished through a 2.5mm incision with great chamber stability and improved safety.

Adjustable Rise Time (ART)- This important safety feature allows the surgeon to custom tailor phaco aspiration flow and vacuum rates. Once occlusion is established the machine senses it and according to the parameters selected, slows down the acceleration profile of these two variables. This allows a calibrated approach to removing material. For those surgeons who like quick removal and those that prefer greater control, the system allows each to establish optimal parameters. Multiple programs are preset to optimize specific techniques.

Only Keragenix can deliver both new and factory reconditioned Surgical Design machines to veterinary ophthalmology. Our factory reconditioned machines (ART platform) come with two new handpieces, an upgraded console and a factory one year warranty (extended warranties available). The latest technology platform is the new Advantage ART machine. This has advanced software features allowing variable power programming which simulates infinite control of the pulse feature. The Advantage has many other improvements in controls of all parameters and is even more reliably constructed than the extremely robust ART platform, including the use of microprocessors, optical encoders and military grade component selection throughout the design.

Improved Phaco Probe Efficiency

The Gravlee Safety Bevel Probe® by Mastel Precision is destined to be the new standard for the safest and most efficient phaco- emulsification probe.
There have been many improvements in fluidics and handpieces over the years, however the initial probe design has remained unchanged. Using the standard tip configuration needlessly endangers the posterior capsule. The posterior capsule has to travel a longer distance to hit the Gravlee Safety Bevel Probe® if it should trampoline upward. Should the posterior capsule travel that far, it encounters a flat surface rather than the sharp leading edge of the traditional probe.

The descriptive term “safety bevel” was coined and trademarked because the bevel creates a safer environment without any sharp edges or angles presented to the posterior capsule as long as the phacoemulsification handpiece is held in a fairly horizontal position.
